Riyadh and Jeddah are the two cities most visitors to Saudi Arabia see first, yet their weather is very different. Riyadh sits on a high desert plateau in the heart of the country, while Jeddah lies on the Red Sea coast. Here is what to expect in each season, and when to plan your trip. For live conditions, open Riyadh weather today or Jeddah weather today.
Riyadh: dry heat and cool winter nights
Summer (May to September)
Riyadh summers are very hot and dry. Daytime highs often go above 40°C at the peak of summer (June to August), with low humidity and intense sunshine. The UV index is very high around midday, so avoid direct sun between late morning and mid-afternoon. Nights stay warm.
Winter (December to February)
Days are mostly mild and sunny, while temperatures drop at night and can feel cold, especially during the Murabbaniyah period. This is the favourite season for outdoor activities, desert camping and events around the capital. Bring a jacket for the evening.
Rain and dust
Most of Riyadh's rain falls between November and April, as short showers that are sometimes thundery and heavy. Dust and sandstorms are more frequent in spring and early summer when winds pick up. Check air quality (PM10 and PM2.5) on the Riyadh weather page and read our sandstorm safety guide.
Jeddah: heat with Red Sea humidity
Why Jeddah feels hotter than the thermometer
The Red Sea adds moisture to the air all year, so humidity is high, especially in summer and during nights and early mornings. Sweat evaporates slowly in humid air, so the feels-like temperature can be several degrees higher than the actual temperature. Always look at humidity and feels like on the Jeddah weather page, not only at the temperature.
Season by season
- Summer (June to September): hot and humid, with warm nights. Go out early in the morning or in the evening on the Corniche.
- Autumn (October and November): heat eases gradually; thunderclouds can bring sudden heavy showers on some days.
- Winter (December to February): the most pleasant time of year, with mild days and comfortable nights. Short, heavy downpours can occur.
- Spring (March to May): temperatures climb again, and some days bring dusty winds.
Beach days
Red Sea water is warm for most of the year. Before swimming, check wind speed, wave height and water temperature on Jeddah beach weather or Yanbu beach weather. Use high-SPF sunscreen and swim only in supervised areas.
Best time to visit Riyadh and Jeddah
For most travellers, the most comfortable period for both cities is roughly November to March, when days are mild and outdoor sightseeing is enjoyable. Keep in mind:
- Riyadh nights can be cold in December and January, so pack layers.
- Jeddah stays warm and slightly humid even in winter, which is ideal for the seafront.
- If you must travel in summer, plan outdoor activities for early morning and after sunset, and spend the hottest hours indoors.
Summer escapes: Taif, Abha and Al Baha
When Riyadh and Jeddah are at their hottest, many residents head to the southwestern highlands. Thanks to their altitude, Taif, Abha and Al Baha are much cooler in summer, with fresh evenings. Expect fog on mountain roads on some days and afternoon thunderstorms that can bring rain and flash floods in the valleys. Pack a light jacket and keep an eye on the rain radar.
Packing tips
- Light, loose, light-coloured clothing and a hat for daytime.
- A warm layer for winter evenings in Riyadh and in the highlands.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses all year round.
- A refillable water bottle: drink regularly, even in winter.
